Preschool Program

At SSFUSD, we believe that the best learning for young children happens through play, exploration, and connection. Our preschool classrooms are warm, welcoming spaces where children ages 3-5 develop the social, emotional, and early academic skills they need to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.

Children in our program build foundational skills in early literacy and language, number sense, shapes, science, and the arts — all within a play-based environment that sparks curiosity and a love of learning. Equally important, children practice the social and emotional skills that matter most at this age: sharing, communicating, building friendships, and learning to navigate the world around them with confidence.

Our programs are grounded in California's most current research-based standards for early learning. We follow the SEEDS of Learning Framework in both preschool and transitional kindergarten. "SEEDS" refers to: Sensitivity, Encouragement, Education, Development through Doing, and Self-image Support. SEEDS of Learning is an evidence-based approach that supports students' oral language, literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing), and social skills, preparing students for kindergarten and beyond. Instruction is provided in whole- and small-group settings to ensure students' academic and social-emotional needs are met.

We use the California Preschool / Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) to guide instruction and the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) to assess each child's development and school readiness — both of which align with the California Common Core State Standards.

We also know that children thrive when their families are supported. That's why SSFUSD offers parent workshops designed to strengthen parenting skills and extend learning beyond the classroom — because when families and schools work together, children flourish.
